From a warehouse to a legend

In September 1974, entrepreneur Shakour Abu Ghazalah turned an old rented warehouse on Old Airport Road in Jeddah into what is described as Saudi Arabia's first pressure-fried chicken restaurant. That restaurant became Albaik.

Today Albaik is the largest restaurant chain in Saudi Arabia, and its name is registered in many countries.

What broasted means

Albaik is known for broasted chicken, cooked in a pressure fryer. Pressure frying seals in moisture, so the chicken stays juicy inside while the coating turns crisp and golden.

Meals usually come with fries, a soft bun and small tubs of the chain's famous garlic sauce, which many fans say is the real star.

A cult following

For many visitors to Saudi Arabia, eating Albaik is a must, and queues at busy branches can be long at peak times. Residents who move abroad often name it as one of the foods they miss most.

The chain also serves shrimp and fish meals, and its prices have stayed accessible, part of the reason it is so widely loved.

Nutrition notes

Like all fried chicken, broasted chicken is high in calories and fat, especially with the skin and coating, and garlic sauce adds more. Sharing a meal or skipping the extra sauce lightens it.

Balancing a fried chicken meal with water and a fresh salad later in the day is a simple way to enjoy a local favourite without overdoing it.

How to order like a local

Regulars know that the garlic sauce is the heart of the meal, and many ask for extra. Spicy chicken is popular for people who want more heat, and shrimp meals are a favourite for those who want something different.

Busy times are around lunch and late evening, especially on weekends, so going a little earlier or later can mean shorter queues. Many branches also offer drive-through and delivery for when you want Albaik at home.
